The Integrative Therapy Process

The therapists at NY Health Hypnosis & Integrative Therapy are experts at integrating hypnosis into their therapeutic approach to help propel people forward. As clinical psychologists who have all received extensive training in their doctoral and postdoctoral training from prestigious academic institutions, they each combine hypnosis and mindfulness with therapy techniques, such as psychoanalysis, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprogramming (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

While hypnosis is often portrayed as a quick fix, we understand how to incorporate it as just one piece of the puzzle in order to focus on helping people make changes that last. We value the therapeutic relationship to thoroughly address concerns, using research-based techniques and creativity to address core issues so that changes are deep and meaningful.

Our therapists work to create a plan that is individualized and tailor our approach to each person. By creating a unique plan for each person who comes to us, we can address specific goals, as well as attend to the complicated nature of individuals’ struggles since concerns are oftentimes interconnected and complex. For instance, a person might want to lose weight, but this goal can be complicated by negative self-image or problems in relationships. Or a client might have difficulty sleeping at night, and while relaxation techniques used in hypnosis can partially address the sleep issue, underlying anxiety might continue to interfere with the client’s work and daily life. As such, our therapists take an approach that is flexible and organic, striking a balance between deep analytic and interpersonal work to address the root of the problems and using mindfulness, hypnosis, and other evidence-based techniques to help with specific changes along the way.

What to Expect

Your First Therapy Session
Your first session typically lasts 45 minutes and focuses on gaining an in-depth understanding of your past and current struggles. The therapist will review your history to develop an understanding of how and why this struggle started. Then depending on why you're coming in for help and if time allows, you may also engage in the induction of a hypnotic trance when it is mutually agreed upon by the therapist and client.

More specifically, much of the first session will focus on reasons why certain behaviors, struggles or patterns persist, enabling the therapist to determine which hypnosis, mindfulness, and therapy techniques should be used to best address this issue. Before any technique is chosen, the therapist will discuss how hypnosis, mindfulness or another tool will be used in the session and answer any questions you may have about the use of hypnosis or other processes. At the end of the first session, the therapist will make recommendations about the course of therapy, and you can decide together when you would like to schedule additional session(s).

Ongoing Therapy
We understand that people have variable schedules and needs, and as such, we balance our professional opinion of what we believe would be the best care with a person's availability and the cadence at which therapy feels comfortable. Once the therapist gets a full understanding of the issues a patient would like to address, the client and therapist determine the best way to work together to ensure optimal client progress. We recommend hypnosis or mindfulness techniques, combined with therapy, for complex issues, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, trauma, eating disorders, ADHD, chronic pain, and issues with relationships. For this work, the client and therapist develop an ongoing therapeutic relationship in which weekly or biweekly appointments will be set up, though the frequency can be modified according to the client's schedule and needs. For many struggles, it can be helpful to meet for at least a few months, at which point you and your therapist can explore the ways in which your goals have been met and how you want your therapy to continue. We make scheduling easy, with a HIPAA-compliant patient portal that allows you to schedule virtual or in-person appointments online, as well as view patient and billing information at your convenience.
