When you are ready to move forward, the first step is to make an appointment. Your first session offers the opportunity to experience hypnosis and decide if it is a good fit for you. From there, you and your therapist determine the best way to move forward.

A typical first session lasts 45 minutes and focuses on gaining an in-depth understanding of one specific issue of the client's choosing; this is followed by the induction of a hypnotic trance when the client and therapist agree this is the best course of therapy. The therapist will go over client history to develop an understanding of how and why this struggle started. Much of the first session will focus on reasons why certain behaviors, struggles or patterns persist, enabling the therapist to determine what hypnosis, mindfulness, and therapy techniques should be used to best address this issue. Before starting the hypnotic induction, the therapist will discuss with the client how hypnosis will be used in the session and answer any questions the client may have about the use of hypnosis or the process.
NY Health Hypnosis practices Ericksonian Hypnosis, which uses the art of language and storytelling to speak to the unconscious mind. This includes deep relaxation techniques and metaphors aimed at helping clients tap into their internal resources in order to make the changes they would like to address.
After the first session, the client and therapist decide the best way to work together to ensure optimal client progress. Generally, short-term hypnosis is best for singular struggles such as smoking cessation or simple habits, and usually takes one to five sessions. Ongoing integrative therapy, combined with hypnosis, is best suited for issues such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, trauma, eating disorders, ADHD, chronic pain, and struggles that involve more than one issue. For this work, the client and therapist develop an ongoing therapeutic relationship where weekly or biweekly appointments can be set up with any needed flexibility according to the client's schedule.
We combine the use of hypnosis and mindfulness with therapy techniques such as psychoanalysis, CBT, DBT and ACT, since most people's difficulties are intricate, interconnected, and complex. A client may want to lose weight, but this goal can be complicated by negative self-image or problems in relationships. A client might want to quit smoking, but find themselves compelled to do so because of ongoing anxiety or low self-esteem. Or perhaps a client can't sleep at night; relaxation techniques used in hypnosis can address the sleep issue, but underlying anxiety might continue to interfere with the client’s work and daily life. Our therapists take an approach that is flexible and organic, striking a balance between deep analytic work to get to the root of the problems and using hypnosis for specific changes along the way.
